At age 26, Gordon is stock car racing's biggest star.

He won 10 races in '96 and has 10 more victories this season, becoming only the second driver to capture a $1 million bonus for winning the Daytona 500, Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte and Southern 500 at Darlington. Also, he is the first driver since Darrell Wal-trip in 1981-82 to reach double-figure wins in consecutive years. Gordon won the first two races at Daytona and Rockingham, and he has led the standings all but two weeks since his June 8 victory in the Pocono 500. (AP) Mark Martin and Dale Jarrett say all the pressure is on Jeff Gordon, who leads the NASCAR Winston Cup standings heading into year's final race at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Gordon doesn't mind a bit. "I'd much rather be in the position I'm in than the position they're in," said Gordon, who can clinch his second Winston Cup championship with an 18th-place finish in Sunday's NAPA 500.

"If they can see me in their mirror, I know they're going to be sweating." Jarrett and Martin, neither of whom has won a Winston Cup title, say they have nothing to lose on Atlanta's re-configured 1.54-mile oval. Jarrett trails Gordon by 77 points and Martin is another 10 points back. "If I was in Jeff Gordon's shoes, I would be sweating," Martin said. "When you're leading, nothing can happen except you lose." "I think Mark or myself would love to trade places and take a 77-point lead," Jarrett said. "But the pressure is definitely on them (Gordon's team).

It's their championship to lose." Gordon wrapped up his first season championship two years ago in Atlanta, but his margin of error was much larger. He came into that race with a 147-point lead over Dale Earnhardt, needing only to finish 41st or lead a lap to clinch the title. Earnhardt won the race, but Gordon won the championship by nursing a poor-handling car to a 32nd-place finish. Last year, Gordon squandered a Ill-point lead with just four races to go and came to Atlanta trailing Terry Labonte by 47 points. Gordon ran a strong race in his Chevrolet Lumina, finishing third, but Labonte cruised to the championship by staying out of trouble and winding up fifth.

Gordon would like to follow Labonte's example. "We can't make any silly mistakes," Gordon said. But his best finishes were second in 1990 and '93. "I would love to be able to hand that championship trophy to (car owner) Jack Rousch," said Martin, who has four victories in his Ford Thunderbird after failing to win last year. "If I don't hurry up and do it, one of my teammates is going to do it." Jarrett, who also drives a Ford, is contending for the Winston Cup title for the second year in a row, club marks for their fastest start after five, 10 and 15 games this season and added the 20-game mark to their record book with Thursday night's victory. Niklas Lidstrom, the NHL's power-play points leader among defensemen entering the game, also did not play for Detroit because of a sore midsection. The Senators were competing in their fifth contest in a run of seven games in 12 nights and pressed to open the scoring.

But it was Yzerman who struck first, beating Ottawa goaltender Damian Rhodes from the top of the right faceoff circle 4:29 into the first period. The Red Wings Chip Craig said. "That's what we've asked the kids to do. I think if we're able to keep close in the games we always have a chance to get the next goal and the kids realize that." With many of the seniors knowing nothing but state championships, the veteran players have let it be known to the younger ones what's at stake.
